A Massachusetts woman didn't know she was pregnant until after she had given birth on the toilet — and even then, the baby's father initially thought the newborn in the toilet bowl was just feces.

Melissa Surgecoff, 38, thought she was merely suffering from bad menstrual pain on the day she went into labor — and even as the pain increased and she asked her fiancé, Donnie Campbell, 37, to call 911, her assumption was that she was passing a kidney stone.

She was sitting on the toilet when baby Liam entered the world, yet she still didn't understand what had happened, and found herself 'freaking out' and assuming at first that she had lost an organ.

What's that? When Liam entered the world, she still didn't understand what had happened, and found herself 'freaking out' and assuming at first that she had lost an organ

According to NBC Boston, the Peabody-based couple has been together for seven years.

Though they wanted to have children, they had planned to wait until after their wedding, which had been postponed due to the pandemic.

'We always wanted our ducks in a row, we wanted to get married, we wanted to move out, we wanted to have the right jobs,' Melissa said.

But on March 8, Melissa started feeling unwell early in the morning, assuming she was having intense menstrual cramps.

The cramps continued to get worse and occurred closer together, growing so painful that Melissa asked Donnie to call 911 and tell the dispatcher that she was passing a kidney stone.

In the meantime, Melissa sat on the toilet, the only place she felt any relief.

Confused: Her fiancé, Donnie Campbell, 37, thought upon first look that it was feces before realizing it was a baby and cleaning it off

Ouch! Melissa thought she was merely suffering from bad menstrual pain on the day she went into labor, and even as the pain increased, she thought she was passing a kidney stone

'I was screaming, I was trying not to be loud like I didn't know what this was,' she told Today.

Before EMTs could arrive, Melissa felt something leave her body and checked to see what it was.

'I look in the toilet and I still didn't know what it was,' she said. 'I thought I basically lost an organ because I didn't know! I'm screaming, I'm freaking out, I'm in shock.'

Donnie came into the bathroom and looked into the toilet — but at first glance, he thought the newborn was feces.

Before long, though, he'd figured out that it was a baby and picked it out of the toilet and cleaned it up.

'We were just kind of in shock and not expecting it, and all the sudden there’s a baby in the toilet,' he said.

Huh! Looking back, Melissa can now recognize signs that she was pregnant

The new parents took their surprise baby to the hospital, where doctors confirmed that he was healthy.

Looking back, Melissa can now recognize signs that she was pregnant, but at the time, she thought her weight gain was due to the pandemic and dismissed her mission period as part of her normal irregular cycle.

'So if you look back on it now, yeah, there are clear-cut signs,' she said. 'Like my feet were swollen... My shoulders and upper body were swollen and just like, you know, gaining weight.'

Though she and Donnie were shocked at first, she says she now sees the addition to her family as 'amazing,' and credits her family for helping to get her everything she needed on such short notice.

'Normal moms have nine months to plan to do whatever, to save and get gifts and buy stuff. Once [my family] found out, they went into super overdrive,' she said.
