I foolishly tried to remove limescale from my black marble worktop by leaving kitchen paper soaked in vinegar overnight. Totally ruined that area. Help!GB, Worthing, West Sussex

From the picture it looks as if you have a granite worktop. Marble tends to have veins running through it, whereas granite has what appear to be flakes within the stone. You were right to use vinegar to remove limescale, but this should not be applied directly and left to soak, but rather used on a cloth and wiped off immediately. The likely reason it has lost its shine is the vinegar has etched off the polish. Local company francistatemarbleworks.co.uk could repolish it, but to receive an even result, the whole worktop would need to be taken
