Not one, but two Owatonna High School teams play tournament games Friday. One team is at the state tournament. The other is striving to get there. Huskies boys basketball plays Farmington at 6 pm at the Mayo Civic Center Arena in Rochester in the Section 1-4A title game. OHS adapted floor hockey is in the state tournament quarterfinals versus Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville at Bloomington Jefferson High School at 6:30 pm.
Here are a few important things to know if you are going to the boys basketball clash.
There is no pre-sale of tickets. Everyone must purchase a ticket at the Mayo Civic Center Box Office. You are encouraged to arrive early as the game will start at 6 pm sharp. The cost is $10 for adults and $6 for students. All seats are general admission.
Masks are not required at Mayo Civic Center. All bags and purses are subject to search. Metal detectors are used at the arena entrance.
No. 6 rated Owatonna (26-2) is on a 20-game winning streak. The Huskies beat Rochester Mayo 70-52 and No. 9 ranked Lakeville North 83-66 to reach the section finals for the second straight season. OHS topped Lakeville South a year ago to advance to state where they lost to Shakopee in the quarterfinal round.
Owatonna advanced past Farmington last year by forfeit due to COVID. The Tigers only state tournament appearance for boys basketball came in 1937.
No. 8 Farmington (21-7) has won six in a row since a loss to Shakopee, who they split with during the season. The Tigers beat John Marshall 80-53 and Lakeville South 55-47 to reach Friday's section championship.
If you attend the adapted floor hockey game, you must purchase your ticket in advance through the Minnesota State High School League at www.mshsl.org/tickets. The price is $8.50 for adults and $5.50 for students.
The Huskies are on a four-game winning streak including a 19-13 playoff win over White Bear Lake. They will play once on Friday and possibly two games on Saturday.
This is Owatonna's 14th appearance at state. They won the title in 2004 and have finished second three times.
Additionally this weekend, the Owatonna girls youth hockey U15B team plays in their state tournament in Moorhead beginning Friday, March 18.
