October beer news in brief

There are lots of Oktoberfest events happening this month – we hope to see you at a few of them. Out of the Brew finally has its liquor licence, and Hong Kong Beer Co is celebrating its 26th anniversary this year with a few events lined up, so check those out below.

We recommend checking out the new Thai + craft beer café Yum Kwun in Wanchai, currently in soft opening. They have 11 taps (but no licence yet) and a really tasty set lunch menu.

Another good one to visit is Moonkok, just opened at K11 Art Mall. It’s no longer a Moonzen bar and has all sorts of local beers on tap. They will host a Yardley Brothers event on Thursday, 21 October – a perfect excuse to have a look.

Congratulations to 99 Bottles on their new tap system – fancy!

Young Master has launched weekly specials for the YMFAM to help you to gather those points for red pants status (we are only just green – still a way to go). Sign up for free and get a free beer for your trouble. Keep an eye on their newly resumed (and newly sold out) brewery tour page for more tour sessions too.

Carbon Brews has turned 3! To celebrate, they are offering us a discount. Use promo code HBDCARBON3 for a 15% discount on online products (excluding sale items). We highly recommend the sour anniversary beer Young Wild & 3, but it’s very limited in production (and with no discount).

The beer we helped to develop and brew with Smash was launched – if you see Ronin’s Hazy, please check it out! It’s currently draught only at Craftissimo, Hoppy Junction, Kowloon Taproom and Liquor of Lion (LoL).

UPDATE: check out new start-up Craftlah, which aims to get you local craft beers delivered cold on the same day that you order them. Get your order in by 2pm and you can be enjoying a quarantine mixed case that night (without the quarantine, hopefully). Use promo code Foodie15 for 15% off and enjoy free delivery for spends over $600.

Events, tap takeovers & beer launches

As events are announced, we will add them here...

They are doing it again! 1% for the Planet adherent Double Haven is hosting a camping and diving trip – guaranteed good times and good beers. Read more about what’s included on Facebook and book through scuba@saikungindustries.com.

Book yourself and three friends in to try these new workshops at GRAIN in K-Town and taste the latest on-site brews from Gweilo before they are released. The event includes a guided brewery tour, beer-tasting session with a flight of five on-site-brewed beers and sharing-style snack selection for $528 per person. Advance booking is required.

The Russian beer is back again! Zagovor boasts “craft beer from the deep end of the Russian underground”, and they have put kegs of five different beers on a plane to be served fresh at Artisan Brewer. Their best-rated beers are fruited goses and juicy New England-style IPAs – and a mead! – so look out for those.

The collaboration VHHX Vienna Lager will launch on Thursday, 28 October at MR & MRS FOX. Why did hEROES need to collaborate with Cathay Pacific Catering Services for this beer? Because it’s made with their surplus bread! That’s right, following in the footsteps of Breer and Bao Beer, we have another beer to drink that makes use of bread that would otherwise be wasted. Knowing hEROES, it’s going to be amazing... The lager will sell for $50, and a “special pairing dish” will only be available for this even. AvGeek question: what’s the meaning behind “VHHX”?

Launching two beers – a double IPA called Double Vision and a black double IPA called Black to the Future – Carbon Brews has teamed up with some quality nosh. Smoke & Barrel will be putting on some amazing BBQ, and there will be 15% off food items on the night with the purchase of the new double IPAs. Chill to live music starting at 7pm, and beers will be $78/pint or $40/can.

Two great breweries have joined forces to make the Hop Shaped Box hazy IPA – Behemoth Brewing from New Zealand and Heart of Darkness from Vietnam. Whilst this sort of awesomeness happens all the time, there is something new thanks to Tai-Pan Beer Co. You can try the keg version jet-fresh from Vietnam alongside the cans direct from New Zealand on Wednesday, 27 October at Craftissimo. Are they the same? Who does it better? This sounds like a challenge we can get behind.

Hong Kong Beer Co is the oldest craft brewery in Hong Kong, and you know they are going to make up for not being able to celebrate their quarter century in 2020. This first party was held at The Roundhouse in Wanchai and featured seven fresh Hong Kong Beer Co brews on draught, including their very special saison anniversary brew. Bonus: register for the Zoom tasting on Thursday, 4 November and get a six-pack of fresh beers, including two saisons, for just $100.

Hong Kong Beer Co celebration calendar:

This is an epic one-off collaboration brunch at Awa Awa to celebrate the release of Dragon Water’s new core flavour, Yuko Ginger. We’ve heard this is the best one yet, and if you have any interest in an Okinawan-inspired brunch with free-flow and DJ for only $388 per person, you must reserve a spot now by phoning Awa Awa on 2178 1838, because it will sell out.

The last cost-price keg event (where one keg is sold in 400ml pours at cost price) was wildly popular, and this time around, the folks at The Globe are doing it with Equilibrium, which has a cult-like following and is tremendously expensive in Hong Kong. We don’t yet know what’s in the 20L keg, but we do know that it will be gone by 5:15pm – you’ve been warned!

45 Graham Street, SoHo, Central, 2543 1941

Love brewing but live in a HK shoebox? Get to HK Brewcraft to take advantage of their co-brewing event, where you will be able to use their equipment for free to do your brew. Liquor of Lion has already become quite a natural part of the Staunton Street scene, but we will not begrudge them the opportunity to have an official opening party – especially when they are offering $50 pints from 6pm. Revisit some old favourites, like Lion Rock Brewery’s Grandmaestro 一代宗師 IPA, and then try our baby, Ronin’s Hazy Pale Ale (brewed by Smash at the Lion Rock brewery). If you miss the party, normal happy hour is from 4–8pm every day.

25 Staunton Street, SoHo, Central

Culmination Brewing Company is a brewery from Oregon focused on innovation and collaboration, so it’s fitting they have hooked up with local legends Double Haven for this takeover at Blue Supreme. If you love hop-forward beers, there are three fresh-from-the-plane brews to choose from. Try a mid-strength tropical hazy pale, a clean and dry IPA with pine and grapefruit zest or a new one (for us) – a cold IPA, which is fermented warm with lager yeast and hopped with Hallertau Mittelfrüh and Calista.

Time flies, and it’s been four years since the The Madhouse opened its doors. For this birthday party, they will have a few special one-keg-only beers, cans and anniversary beers from different breweries – with 40% off draught beers in the afternoon and 20% off after 8pm. There will be games and lucky draws, and reservations are encouraged.

Visit new beer shop GurBeer on Friday, 1 October for their grand opening and peruse their great selection of local and imported beers, with some cool incentives. Cloudwater will be 20% off on this day only, there is free beer for a social media follow and there are gifts with purchases. We visited them on our recent beer adventure during our Marco Polo German Bierfest-cation, and we did not leave empty-handed.

“Enter the magical world of Belgian beers. From the refreshingly fruity Witbiers, the dry and sometimes peppery saisons, the renowned and complex Trappist ales, to the wild and spontaneous lambics/gueuzes, you’ll find yourself indulging in a symphony of the wildest original beer styles.” A symphony of the wildest original beer styles – how can you say no to that? Priced at $150, this HK Brewcraft tasting will surely sell out.

Gueuzerie Tilquin is a Belgian lambic beer blendery based in Bierghes, Belgium, founded in 2009. They purchase worts from Belgium lambic breweries such as Cantillon, Lindemans and Girardin, and their blends include Oude Guenze, fruit lambics and grape lambics. Interestingly, their draught versions of lambics differ from their bottles. An important event at Second Draft for lambic lovers, put this on the calendar!

BeerJJ nerds Smash will be launching a limited-edition New England pale ale that aims to to retain all the mouthfeel, juiciness and big hops of higher-ABV NEIPAs, packing them into a more sessionable beer. So you can smash, not get smashed.

UPDATE: yay, it went well! This super-fresh hazy went down a treat. We (Brew 852) worked on this recipe with Smash for about eight months. Try it at Craftissimo or Hoppy Junction!

Following the sell-out beer-pairing menu at Roganic, Yardley Brothers has teamed up with premium taproom Blue Supreme to design a pairing menu especially for the brewery’s four brand-new and limited-release beers – no core beers on this menu.

New Paper Umbrella Pina Colada Milkshake IPA is a low-bitterness, lactose-sweetened IPA described as “beachy, breezy and sunny”. Be the first to try it at one of our favourite spots, Ho Lan Jeng, but be warned that it packs a 6.5% ABV punch.

Also launched recently from Young Master is HEA CBG Pale Ale, which contains 60mg/L of CBG (rather than CBD), and a 4% ABV Berliner Weisse called Izakaya in Berlin.

September new taprooms

Artisan Brewer has already been open for a little while, but they have only just recently received their liquor licence. We dropped in pretty much straight away to try it out. They have 20 taps and a really nice mix of local and imported beers. Of special note – the food we have had here has been amazing (try the bone-marrow risotto with a sour beer to cut through the rich decadence).

They have just started a free-flow deal (with or without brunch) at the weekend – five selected craft beers and four wines in a two-hour free-flow for $238. It’s so great to have a spot with good food and good beer. We only wish it were bigger and slightly less sit-down formal.

28 Hollywood Road, Central, 9848 2863

We have still yet to visit Eaton HK’s own signature bar in Jordan, with its vibrant indoor/outdoor setting facing The Astor’s plaza. There’s good reason to go – Flower Years is hosting a local beer fest until 31 October featuring a selection of beers from Carbon Brews, Tai Wai Brewery, Mak’s Brewery, Moonzen, Gweilo and YAU – over 30 different beers to choose from! Order a beer combo set ($138) with a choice of food, including a classic beefburger, spicy fried chicken burger or Impossible tacos, paired with a bottle of craft beer.

We have been visiting Papa Gomes for comforting Indian food for years, so we were really interested to see the family branch out to open Gomes Gastropub on Caine Road. We are disappointed that there are no local beers on tap, but they are selling some Double Haven and Dragon Water in cans.

Unique to Hong Kong is their baiju beer – a beer-baiju hybrid prepared by @baijiusociety in the UK that aims to mellow the flavours of baiju and make it more palatable for the inexperienced.

Tseung Kwan O just keeps getting better! Once You Go Craft in Tai Kok Tsui has teamed up with HeySoNuts for a new project in TKO called Gonuts, specialising in coffee, Western cuisine, dessert and craft beer. They have 10 rotating taps, mostly HK beers, including their signature OYGC house IPA, and are open daily until 10pm, with a 20% discount on craft beer from 8pm. We are excited to learn that the space is dog friendly, and the brekkie pics look delicious too.

Momentai in Sai Kung has closed because the government lease on their venue has expired. It’s possible that this is a temporary closure, which we’re pretty happy about, and – more good news – in the meantime, they are taking up a new spot in Kowloon. The new venue is called Graceland: Mong Kok and will specialise in Southern soul food, organic wines, great beers on tap and a killer soundtrack. Graceland: Mong Kok plans to open in early October.

A Sai Ying Pun neighbourhood bar that will serve classic Western-style food and pub snacks to match a good selection of HK craft beer. They will have six taps, with Seven Brews, Heroes and Carbon Brews on tap to start (rotated every month), and Yardley Brothers, Young Master and others will be available bottled.

Grandpa’s Crib will do a monthly free-flow, with two hours access to their taps and house spirits for $200! With great taste in beer and music, we are eager for their planned opening the second week of September (soft opening on Wednesday the 15th, with BYOB until their liquor licence comes through).

5C First Street, Sai Ying Pun

This taproom is brought to us by the Lion Rock Brewery team and is located on Staunton Street, close to The Globe. Liquor of Lion (LoL) will focus on local brews from Lion Rock and others and will have a small kitchen bringing us HK-style bar snacks. The Chinese name of LoL is 釀酒獅, which translates literally to “brewing lion”, but the final sound is the same as “master” – very cool. There is some fantastic neon artwork inside, and we are excited to visit.

UPDATE: opening on Friday, 17 September!

Mak’s Brewery now has a taproom in the long-awaited Central Market space, opened on Monday, 23 August. The venue already has nine taps hooked up to a variety of fresh brews from the local brewery.

Out of the Brew is nestled down the Shin Hing Street staircase near Whisky & Words, BEDU and COA, and they plan to take advantage of this location by hosting events like beer launches and dog-adoption days. Right now, they’re waiting for their liquor licence for consumption on-site, but they are already open as a takeaway bottle shop with a good selection, so drop in and offer them some advice on which of your favourite local brews to put on tap. They’ve told us they will have a dedicated tap for DEADMAN Brewery and one for Double Haven, and another three will rotate depending on what’s fresh.
